Getting an order for energy efficiency project through JASE-W activities
Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide (JASE-W) works with the aim of contributing to solve global environmental and energy issues by promoting excellent Japanese smart energy products and technologies on a global business level with public-private cooperation.
We are pleased to announce that Mayekawa MFG, a member of our alliance, has recently got an order for energy efficiency project by taking advantage of the business matching meeting held on the two public-private missions dispatched to Mexico. This order is the first one through JASE-W activities
- Date of the order : Friday, November 12, 2010
- Contracting parties
Owner: Group Gamesa Corporation of the PEPSICO Group
Supplier: Mayekawa MFG
- Description of the order
Three adsorption refrigerators (30RT) by Mayekawa MFG will be delivered to the Group Gamesa Corporation’s biscuit manufacturing plant. Adsorption refrigerators produce cold water for the factory air conditioning by utilizing the exhaust heat generated from the biscuit line oven.
- Overview of the equipments
- Expected energy efficiency effect (power comparison)
Conventional chiller: 131.2kw
Adsorption refrigerator: 29.6kw (one forth of a conventional model)
- Comments by Mayekawa MFG
With considerable support from the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, JASE-W, JETRO and CCE on this Mexico Mission, we were able to receive a purchase order from the PEPSICO Inc.
Looking back, facing an energy efficiency task that could not be settled by an individual company, we were able to propose an energy efficiency solution with great synergistic effect by combining equipments from JASE-W’s Latin America sub working group companies.
We believe that it attracted an interest from a Mexican company and has led to our receiving an order.
As a leader of the Latin America sub working group, we will continue taking similar approaches by cooperating with sub working companies and aim for other orders by member companies.
Furthermore, Mayekawa MFG intends to narrow down our target to the industrial sector, and proactively promote and popularize adsorption refrigerators that utilize recyclable energy and Eco Cute with high energy efficiency.
Currently, in the midst of accelerated global warming, some drastic measures are being called for. We hope that energy efficiency measures will be taken on a global scale, prompted by the COP 16 Conference that is being held at present.
Proposal to Promote Smart Energy Business
Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide (JASE-W) has been working to create smart energy business projects since it was founded in October 2008. By joint efforts between public and private sectors, JASE-W has gradually got some results, such as concluding MOU(Memorandum of Understanding) for cooperation on energy projects with REA(Russian Energy Agency), CCE(Consejo Coordinador Empresarial-Mexico) , TERI(The Energy and Resources Institute (India)) and FICCI(Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry), and gaining actual business negotiations and orders. For the sake of vitalization of Japanese economy and contributing to the global environmental and energy issues through promoting excellent Japanese smart energy products and technologies on commercially visible based, JASE-W proposes a follows;.
1. Utilization of the 'Bilateral Off-Set Mechanism' to Smart Energy Projects
- Since the 'Copenhagen Accord' at 15th Conference of the Parties under the United Nations' Climate Change Convention (COP15) last December, it has brought with it the possibility for a particular country to incorporate the reduced emissions from other countries to its own emission reduction targets by implementing low-carbon technologies and equipment to partner countries based on a bilateral agreement. Recently, the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) of Japan had an individual discussion with each of 13 countries such as countries of Southeast Asia by utilizing this framework, and decided to support export of infrastructure which uses Global Greenhouse Gas (GHG) reduction technologies and systems of Japanese companies.
- Technologies and systems related to energy savings and renewable energy (hereinafter called smart energy technologies and systems) can significantly reduce GHG emission not just for investing in new facilities such as infrastructure but also for updating existing ones. From this perspective, we will propose to utilize the commitment scheme between two countries using the framework of 'Bilateral Off-Set Mechanism' for introducing smart energy technologies and systems, including the updating of existing facilities.
- By implementing this, not only can Japan expand our options to achieve our emission reduction targets, but also this will lead to the increase in business opportunities for businesses in our country which have strength in smart energy technologies and systems.
2. Strengthening Government Support for Exploring Smart Energy Projects
- There are huge business opportunities for Japanese companies, because developing countries including resource-rich countries are willing to expand the introduction of energy savings and renewable energy. In order to explore this opportunity and to generate concrete results, it is important to understand precisely the needs and project information of partner countries and to submit proposals with appropriate technologies and resources which meet their needs.
- Particularly in the beginning of exploring projects, it is extremely important for the government and its affiliated organizations to support grasping the needs of the partner country as well as to have the correct information. Further enhancement of efforts in this regard including public-private missions is expected.*
- Furthermore, in order for Japanese businesses to receive orders from projects found like this, it is important to promote demonstration projects which would lead to gaining commercial projects by showing and verifying effectiveness, compliance and feasibility of our smart energy technologies and systems which are the core of our business proposals. From this perspective, JASE-W requests active promotion of introducing Demonstration Projects for Technologies and Systems to improve International Energy Consumption Efficiency and others which METI is requesting for the FY2011 budget.
*JETRO Mexico Public-Private mission held on July 12-16, 2010 was a successful example of providing information and business matching opportunity by government and government-affiliated organizations initiative. Specifically, public-side gathered local companies which had the need and the participation of local government related personnel and from the private-side, the companies which had technologies and resources participated, made the presentation and had individual business negotiations. This public-private effort found the projects which would lead to specific business negotiations. Then, public-private mission was sent again on October 21-25, 2010 to follow up on the particular project, resulting in receiving the official order.

Speech of the representatives from the inaugural meeting
Chairman Fujio Mitarai
Good evening, ladies and gentlemen. As introduced, I am Fujio Mitarai, Chairman of
Nippon Keidanren. Today I would like to say a few words as the representative of the
founders at the inaugural general meeting of the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart
EnergyWorldwide.
As you are all aware, Japan was able to overcome the effects of two oil crises in the past
using its world-leading technology. Even afterwards, Japan has consistently striven for
energy conservation. As a result, Japan has made business development compatible with
the environment, realizing the world's highest levels of energy efficiency.
In recent years, since global environmental problems have become strongly recognized,
efforts to reduce CO2 emissions have been incorporated throughout the business world, and
results have been steadily advancing. The business community will continue to tackle
technical development to maintain Japan's highest levels of energy efficiency, and will strive
in the future to contribute not only through the cooperation of industrial sectors, but also in
household sectors and transportation sectors.
The problem of global warming is not just a problem for Japan, but is common throughout
the world. The resolution of this problem can only be achieved through the use of technology.
Japan maintains a large amount of world-leading technology in energy conservation and
new energy, as represented by low fuel consumption vehicles, heat pumps, and solar power
generation, in addition to production technology.
Based on the results of these types of technological developments, we would like to
realize global warming measures on a global scale by providing support to various overseas
countries.
Accordingly, this Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide is being set up
at this time through cooperation between the Japanese government and the business
community in order to establish Japan's world-leading energy conservation and new energy
technology as an Eco-Brand and to prepare a system for widely disseminating this on a
business basis throughout the world.
I hope very much that the activities of this alliance will be successful as one practical
measure against global warming. In this short speech at the opening of the meeting, I would
like to request the fullest cooperation from everyone concerned, including the Japanese
government.
Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Toshihiro Nikai
As kindly introduced, I am Toshihiro Nikai, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. Today
I would like to say a few congratulatory words to express my great pleasure concerning the
outstanding inauguration of the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart EnergyWorldwide as
it embarks on its new activities.
As you may already know how important energy conservation and new energy is. The
important point at this time is that these efforts must not be confined only within Japan. It has
become clear through conducting measures to cope with global warming that efforts by
Japan alone will not realize satisfactory results, and I believe it will be necessary to plan the
development of energy conservation and new energy together with newly emerging nations
which will undergo a rapid rise in demand for energy in the future. Worldwide, there is a
need for Japanese technology that will achieve energy conservation and new energy, and
the swift realization of this win-win relationship is earnestly required to ensure the strong
economic growth of Japan.
I believe that this alliance will become the parent organization forming the core for
promoting the spread of Japanese energy conservation and new energy products and
technology throughout the world on a business basis, and the alliance is being established
at just the right time.
Japan maintains world-leading technologies including solar power generation, inverters,
heat pumps, and highly efficient thermal power station facilities, and hybrid cars. In order to
have these advanced technologies utilized widely throughout the world, it will be essential to
promote Japan's brand image as an environmentally advanced country and to convey the
smartness of Japanese technology to the world. I believe this will have an extremely
important meaning in determining the course that Japan should follow in the 21st century
and its directions for making new contributions to the world.
In my wish for the increasing development of this alliance, all of the executive members of
my Ministry below the rank of vice-minister are attending this meeting today to show our full
support for the alliance. Thank you for giving me this opportunity to speak.
Chief Vice Chairman Nobuya Minami
My name is Nobuya Minami and I have been appointed as the chief Vice Chairman of
the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy Worldwide.
Here I would like to say a few words as the representative of the host association.
Today we are honored by the presence of Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry
Toshihiro Nikai and other representatives of the government and related institutions,
together with many representatives of leading companies and associations from the
Japanese business world.
At the inaugural meeting of the Japanese Business Alliance for Smart Energy
Worldwide that was held earlier, the alliance was formally inaugurated. In the lead-up to
the inauguration, great assistance was received through efforts by many persons from
government and related institutions and from companies, and I would first like to
express my thanks to all of these people.
The world is currently facing the pressing issues of financial instability and the
economic downturn. On the other hand, we are also in the condition where the tackling
of structural issues on a global scale relating to climate change problems and the
unprecedentedly high prices of natural resources will require the gathering of collective
wisdom.
To realize this, expectations will certainly be high that Japan, which maintains the
world's highest standards of energy conservation and new energy technology, should
adopt a "worldwide" viewpoint as embodied in the name of this alliance when carrying
out its activities.
Against this background, in addition to representatives from government and related
institutions, a total of 67 members (51 companies and 16 associations) from the
business world who are supporting the alliance's activities have gathered here today.
This is highly meaningful, showing that a firm foundation has been established between
government and business for promoting Japan's outstanding energy conservation and
new energy technology to the world.
In the future, this alliance will aggressively develop concrete activities to realize its
objectives, and will strive to become the core Japanese association contributing to
"global energy conservation". To achieve this, it will be indispensable to receive the full
support of representatives of government and related institutions, and to maintain close
cooperation among members as an "alliance".
I therefore wish in this brief speech to earnestly request even greater support and
cooperation from everyone concerned, including all those gathered together today.
